Overlooking the harbour and the mouth of the Percuil River, this south-facing property enjoys some of the finest maritime views in Britain. Yet for years, the outdoor space consisted of a treacherous, 35-degree sloping lawn that could neither be comfortably sat on nor easily maintained.
The owners wanted a garden that mirrored the relaxed elegance of the French Riviera or the Amalfi coast, taking full advantage of St Mawes’ gentle, frost-free microclimate.
Sculpting the Incline into Outdoor Living Rooms
Using traditional Cornish stonemasonry, Jacob tiered the bank into three distinct horizontal levels. The upper level extends the kitchen into an expansive entertaining terrace paved in warm natural stone that remains comfortable under bare feet well after dusk.
Mid-tier planters house two multi-stem olive trees and mature Trachycarpus fortunei palms that frame the water while blocking sightlines from the public footpath below. Scented borders of English lavender, rosemary, and white agapanthus release perfume with the evening sea breeze, creating an intimate, effortless retreat.
