Perched on the headland just outside Portscatho, this open plot commanded magnificent 180-degree ocean panoramas toward Nare Head. But the site’s sheer openness was also its greatest drawback: even on warm summer evenings, relentless coastal winds made sitting outdoors uncomfortable.
The owners wanted a garden that embraced the dramatic coastal scenery without requiring high glass balustrades that constantly smeared with salt spray.
Baffling Atlantic Winds with Topography and Stems
Rather than building rigid barriers that create turbulent eddies, Jacob designed a sunken circular seating basin anchored by a granite fire bowl. By dropping the finished terrace level 1 metre into the ground and surrounding it with sloping granite berms, the wind glides seamlessly overhead.
On the upper levels, broad sweeps of Stipa gigantea and sea hollys act as living wind filters, softening the breeze and producing a soothing oceanic rustle. Even in early spring and late October, the fire bowl keeps the sunken terrace warm and inviting.
